5 Ways to Build Trust with Your Remote Workers

The Coronavirus pandemic has forced many organizations to give remote working a shot. Twitter and Facebook have announced their employees can WFH indefinitely. If you are here, chances are you are managing a remote team too.

I have been working in the freelance economy for 10 years running my digital marketing agency. I assure you, building trust in your remote team is quite a challenge. 1: Get to Know Each Other

Social connections are crucial for developing trust. There are some ways you can foster socialization among your teams:

  • Create a virtual meetup twice a month. Call it the happy hour
  • Have a together at least once a year. Give all teammates a chance to meet and interact with each other.

2: Offer Them Autonomy

Your employees must have a clear sense of direction. Be transparent and encourage self-direction.

A study says that half of the employees are ready to give up a 20% raise if an employer gives them autonomy over how to work. A study by the Harvard Business Review says autonomy increases productivity. The best working days for employees are when they make progress on their goals.

When working remotely, give your team room for achievement. However, be clear about what tasks need to be done by the end of the day. This way, your remote team thrives and you get to build trust.

3: Set the Expectations Beforehand

The finest way of building trust is by setting clear goals and sharing them from day one. It’s okay not to have daily check-ins. Let your remote team know what’s expected of them and they will be accountable if they don’t stick to the KPIs for instance. this way, they will never fall short.

It’s important to make it clear how you want your team to communicate their progress. Do you want daily reports at the end of the workday or an update as soon as one task is completed? Also, let everyone know who is the central point of contact when something goes wrong.

Ideally, have the expectations written down and share them with your team so that everyone’s on the same page. Let them know they need to stick to these goals. Of course, there’s room for exception.

4: Don’t Promote the Time-In-Seat Culture

When it comes to trusting your remote worker, that doesn’t mean you make them sit and work for complete 8 hours. Allowing them to work remotely means you are trusting they will accomplish the agreed goals.

Working from home is different as compared to working from the office. You are definitely going to do your laundry, maybe even cook meals, and feed the kids along with completing your tasks. Don’t be the type of manager who promotes time-in-seat. Empower your team to manage their time and day and deliver what’s expected of them.

If they fail to deliver, only then question them. Hold your employees accountable for the work they are supposed to do, not their work hours.

5: Keep On Tracking the Progress

You shouldn’t be micromanaging your team but being a manager, you must do your job of keeping track of the projects. Be aware of who is working on which project, how much effort they are putting in, the strengths and weaknesses of your team, etc. This way, your team will feel valued and they might as well outperform. Be involved, keep on getting updates but don’t micromanage.
